This game originated in Tanjore in Tamil Nadu. The game became very famous as it had the interest of the then Maharaja of Tanjore. It attracted many players from south India and is a very familiar game in south India as cricket. This game was purely played by the rural boys as it was easily affordable at those days. This game attracted a huge number of students in south India that ball badminton federation was formed in 1961. Indian athletic federation, Indian hockey federation and ball badminton federation of India first formed the Indian Olympic association. it gradually spread to Andhra Pradesh and became very familiar there. The first national championship was conducted at Hyderabad in 1956. It was later introduced to junior and sub-junior level.
